On June 27, 2014, more than 200 Australian Half the Sky supporters gathered in Melbourne at the offices of our fantastic Honorary Patron, PwC, to celebrate the launch of Half the Sky Australia!

It was a night that had been much anticipated. As a Half the Sky Board Member and Managing Director of Kmart Australia—an organisation that has so energetically embraced the cause—Guy Russo commenced the formalities. Guy began by reading a message of congratulations from our Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Guy then introduced Deanne Bevan, his tireless partner, who helped bring Half the Sky to Australia and oversaw the foundation’s legal and tax recognition in Australia, a four-year endeavour!

Next Deanne introduced Jenny Bowen, who mesmerised the crowd with the real-life tale of how Half the Sky was born and spoke of all the hurdles (and blessings!) she faced while working with the Chinese government to re-imagine the child welfare system. Everyone in the room was moved. Then Kylie Kwong our Honorary Patron and much-adored Australian chef, author and restaurateur, took the stage and she too captivated the crowd. She explained that her connection with this great cause was due in part to her own heritage and also her desire to “make the world a better place.”

As a final treat, Half the Sky’s Zhang Zhirong, who helped found Half the Sky with Jenny Bowen, took the stage and offered a moving and heartfelt thanks to Australian supporters for their support.

Entertainment, book signings, door prizes, donations and friendships ensued. It was a wonderful celebration that was only equalled by the equally successful launch in Sydney, that took place a few days later, on July 1, 2014 at the law offices of our respected Honorary Patron, Gilbert + Tobin.

We thank all our supporters and representatives who attended, including representatives from Kmart AustraliaGilbert + TobinJack Morton WorldwideCanturi JewelsThe BWM GroupPwC, as well as many of our Board Members.
